about

I wrote this song a couple months into quarantine, and have been wanting to release it since the day I wrote it. As it turns out,  my patience in regard to the release paid off, because I ended up having the track produced by the fabulously talented, Anthony da Costa.  He's been doing incredible production work during this past year, and I'm thankful he had the time to create a song landscape that makes the hairs on my arms stand up.  The song is about the importance of honoring the parts of ourselves that are often the most difficult to honor.....our creative time, meditation time, quilting time, gardening time, etc......The things that too often get put on the back burner because it seems there's always something more important to do.  As it turns out, during quarantine, I learned to honor my creative time.  To sit with it, and find joy in it.  Taking this time has made me a better human in the world.  I'm happier.  And in turn, my way in the world is more connected.  I'm a better mom.  And wife.  And friend. The dishes can wait.  My creative self can't.

We Became Cups
Music and lyrics by Carrie Elkin

She found a way to let go of the mess of this
She found a way to make gold out of clay
She molded her hands around all that was left of us
We became cups
And from them we drank

Time and time went by and her hands never stopped
And she remembered her uncle in his old clock shop
The way his body moved when the gears turned into time
When he became the tick
His wife became the tock

Round and round we go on the wheel of our days
We’ve got nowhere to hide
But be not afraid
Be not afraid

Her hands turned to fire when the clock chimed at 10
And as the clay spun faster, we fell in love again
We became the figures of dancers and stars
Of all we once were
And all that we are

When it all stopped (she) spinning we collapsed to the floor
We tried to sleep but the moon was wanting more (but the moon begged for more)
So she made us plates and from them we ate
And from our cups we drank
And under the stars we danced
She was the tick
And I was the tock
We’re all just clocks
And we’re all meant to stop

about

Carrie Elkin Austin, Texas

Carrie Elkin is one of those rare artists with a tidal wave singing voice, and a stage whisper writing voice that brings you to the edge of your seat, emotionally. Like Patty Griffin or Brandi Carlile, she straddles the Americana, Folk, and Indie Rock worlds, where meaningful songs meet the fierce-yet- fragile voices of powerful women. ... more
